So, my old phone was having a few issues...but it was still viable until I made time to shop for another.

Until my daughter stepped on it and broke the flip top 99% off. She came to me and said, "I stepped on your phone and think I broke it." Like, DUH! The lid was hanging by the proverbial thread or basically a wire! (Granted, learning has occurred as pointed out by Pink Protege as my daughter told me about this accident unlike the lid to my favorite pitcher which is now no more.)

So, hubbie got me a nice new phone and for the small additional fee (isn't there always one?) they downloaded my phone list. Thank goodness for that!

It is cuter, smaller. That is good but also bad in that I forget and end up inadvertently speaking to people through my cheek. Apparently, that is a pretty effective muffler.

Now if someone would show me how to download cool ringtones!

The best counsel of the weekend was, “You are entering a different phase where you are wondering what you will do. You are looking for things to fill that void. Table any ideas for two weeks and do not take on any new responsibilities this weekend.”

Thank you B. I have known for some time that my initial reaction to such times is to move away from them…instead of just taking the moment to receive the gifts which are there in the quiet times just as they are in the active ones. We all need to be reminded to take time to listen to the spirit.

Thankfully, Kim was there to gently hold down my hand and remind me of that counsel. Sweetly and with such consideration. I knew better…when Les holds his comments in reserve that speaks volumes on an idea…but to have someone remind me gently that the time is just not now, there was just no resistance.

Never underestimate the counsel of those who love you.

Somehow, getting ready to go to events is just not as smooth as I once remember. Maybe it is a function of the fullness of our lives which would be true for Friday. I knew we could not get out too early as I was teaching until 1530. When I finally got home…I just could not get motivated to throw stuff in the suitcase. Les had already packed the van. We were trying to go low drag and bring only a little pavilion and stuff. Kate came home to get Chris and it was hard to leave them…I cherish the time when they are just in our presence. A visual fix is a good thing. A bit of a hug even better! In any case, we got off just as rush hour began and we were an hour and fifteen getting across town effectively removing any chance of getting there long before Kim. On the way it occurred to me that we really had next to no one with us so we asked our Baronage if we could sit with them. They bring their dayshade almost all the time to be able to host Nottinghill but usually the folks from here that travel, bring their own. So, they were happy to have us and it meant a much easier day on Saturday!

We eventually found our way to the hotel, in the end getting a “down home” call from Vicki Lou at the hotel to let us know that Mrs. Moore was waiting for us and that they were concerned that we were not yet there….Vicki Lou much more than Kim. Vicki Lou made coffee for Kim and us and so this particular hotel went way up on our list.

The hotel room was small and very clean with these odd turbo charged toilets that made you think your soul would be sucked out and flushed they were so powerful. We all kind of laughed at them. Friday night was loose and carefree with Les making a Sonic run and catching up with Denise when she got there from NoVa. Who knew that Sonic was such a popular but rare VA thing? You always take for granted what you have, I guess.

Saturday am we got up early to a nice little breakfast and then to site to the pleasure of only having chairs and a table to set up. Quietly visited until it was time to go to sit for court. We tried to stay in the sun as long as possible but we were in full sun in the end. God love those behind us. Last court was very sweet with heartfelt words from them both. Favorite moments for me were the thanks to the Baronage (so rarely done), Michael’s words and when they took a knee before leaving. I would like to see them back.

Coronation was brief. I encourage Arielle to scoot into the little shade offered. Like me, Olaf had forgotten to turn off his cell. God knows mine is loaded with tons of songs. THAT would have been special. Very soon, it was transition. I honestly did not think I would cry and I didn’t really. I guess what touched me was looking into Rag’s eyes and then the words. I wanted to convey my heartfelt thanks for three years of trust and confidence in Fiona. I hope I did so. I also wanted to leave in fealty and so they were very kind and allowed me to do so before I left. It has been three years since I have been able to give my fealty as a French Noblewoman. It felt wonderful.

Even better was my return to my seat where Les waited for me. I have missed him as he has kept the home fire burning during my travel. Few realize how strong you must be to be parted so often. It was of great help to lay my hand on his wrist and feel the interchange of our love and support.

Elspeth’s Laurelling was great. Her face as she tried to remain studied but realization dawned was priceless. Les left with the Order for the vigil and we retired to the shade. It was very sweet the folks who came by to thank me for this and that or to just say Hi. Not surprising, there were those who never spoke but then…likely, they never will and I will have to be fine with that too.

We left mid afternoon to go and relax at the hotel. We meant to do dinner and come back to play but a heavy lassitude fell over me and I knew that I would sleep the sleep of a child like I had not done so in years. Amazing.

There really were no worsts…here are the Bests:

The Girls having a great weekend together and their Dad and I having one too.

Time with Kim. We so rarely have time together without a crowd. We got to talk quietly and laugh gently. She got to counsel me wisely.

Great day shade companions. I think this makes an event. We had lovely people come by. Our Baronage shared space with Hawkwood so we had a lot of our folks and theirs come by. Aelfred and Simone, Lucius, Gwen, Janos, Rachel…all came by to hang out for a bit.

Brilliant diamond and shining smile. Two good people willing to grow together in love. Congratulations Malcolm and Lisette!

Heartfelt connections: It meant a lot to me to catch TRM eye during the transition and during my fealty and see the knowledge and confidence. You cannot underestimate the import of those intimate moments within a public tableau.

WT and his gentleness with others. He is so kind to young people...respectful and nurturing. This is the second time I have seen him make a moment for a young person. I know how important those moments are for their futures.

Pleasant packout: Humor and many hands always makes for pleasant work. As we ran our last errands we said goodbye to others…all with kind words and gentle smiles. Reminded me of the real crux of the SCA.

God knows that nothing is more important in a leader than a sound moral compass as there are far too many who would exert force as they can for personal reasons.
